The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested a 72-year-old man in connection with the killing of Irene Atubiga and her uncle, George Atubiga, at Sakumono in the Greater Accra Region.
The suspect, identified as Samuel Christopher Osei Anto, was picked up at a hideout in Tikrom, near Ejisu, on Sunday, November 1.
The Incident
The victims, aged 47 and 57, were killed at their home at NTHC Estate on Friday, October 30. Officers from the Sakumono District Police Command who responded found both bodies at the residence.
The Manhunt and Arrest
After the shooting, the suspect went into hiding. Police declared him wanted and offered a GH¢100,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. A pistol and seven rounds of ammunition were retrieved when he was arrested.
Alleged Motive
Police point to a financial dispute. Preliminary findings suggest George allegedly borrowed GH¢500,000 from the suspect and did not repay it, and that a misunderstanding followed. An earlier police account says the suspect visited the home with a woman to demand repayment before the situation escalated.
Second Suspect
That woman, Beatrice Mumuni, 47, was arrested earlier. Police allege she led the principal suspect to the victims' residence. With this arrest, both key suspects are now in custody.
Family's Account
The police version is not the only one in circulation. The victims' family has reportedly given a different account, saying a relative had agreed to cover a family member's loan and was expecting to exchange a cheque when the shooting occurred.
What Happens Next
Police describe their findings as preliminary, and both suspects are presumed innocent until a court rules otherwise. They have not said when the suspects will appear in court. The Baatsona Divisional Police Command is leading the investigation.
