Note: This review is a roundup of what leading tech reviewers have published about the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, combined with our own analysis. It is not based on long-term hands-on testing.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale on September 18, 2026. They are excellent phones, but most reviewers describe them as a polish of last year's formula rather than a dramatic leap. If you already own a recent Pro, there is little here that demands an upgrade. If you are coming from an older iPhone, this is among the best phones you can buy.

The headline change is the new 2nm chip. Marques Brownlee noted that it does a great deal of heavy lifting, and several reviewers who tested sustained workloads, such as EFTM, also paid attention to cooling and how well the phone holds its speed under pressure. Day to day, this means fast app launches, smooth gaming and plenty of headroom for years of software updates.
The camera is where reviewers disagree most, and that makes it the most interesting part of the phone.
• The enthusiasts' view: GQ's Robert Leedham argued that the wider, adjustable aperture is really aimed at photographers who know how to take advantage of it. CNET similarly suggested the best camera system is not for everyone.
• The everyday view: Mashable disagreed, saying that even casual shooters can get great photos from the new hardware.
• The middle ground: The Verge found the image quality gains real but modest.
Our take: if you shoot mostly for social media, you will enjoy the camera but will not notice a huge jump. If you care about depth of field, low light and creative control, the variable aperture is a genuine tool.
Battery life earned some of the warmest praise. PCMag went as far as saying the phone ended its battery anxiety about small-battery phones. That fits with the larger battery that was widely rumored for the Pro Max before launch.
Premium hardware comes with a premium price. In Canada, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,749 CAD for 256GB, and the Pro Max starts at $1,899 CAD. Brownlee questioned whether the new models are overpriced for what is an incremental update. Check your local pricing before buying, since it varies widely by country.
Pros
• Fast and efficient 2nm chip
• Variable aperture camera for serious photography
• Strong battery life
• Proven, practical design compared with the Duo
Cons
• High starting price
• Camera gains are subtle for casual users
• Seen by many reviewers as an incremental "S-style" update
The iPhone 18 Pro is the safe, powerful and polished choice. It is not a reason to upgrade if you have last year's Pro, but for anyone on an older iPhone, or any Android user ready to switch, it is easy to recommend. Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
