An explosion involving a motor tricycle reportedly carrying suspected dynamite has killed an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) and left another critically injured at Hamile in the Upper West Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, along an unauthorised route in the border community near Ghana's boundary with Burkina Faso.
According to information gathered from security sources in the area, the motor tricycle was transporting suspected explosive materials when security personnel attempted to intercept it.
The occupants of the tricycle allegedly failed to comply with instructions to stop at a security checkpoint, prompting officers to pursue them.
The pursuit reportedly ended in a powerful explosion that caught the pursuing personnel, killing one immigration officer and leaving another with critical injuries.
The civilians travelling on the tricycle were also reportedly killed in the blast.
The injured officer is said to be in a serious condition. However, details about the extent of the injuries and the medical facility where the officer is receiving treatment have not yet been confirmed.
The circumstances surrounding the explosion remain unclear, with further details expected from the relevant security authorities.
Hamile is an important border community in the Upper West Region, where security agencies conduct surveillance and patrols to monitor cross-border movements and prevent unauthorised activities.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the transportation of potentially dangerous materials through unofficial border routes and the risks faced by security personnel working in such areas.
Authorities are yet to provide a comprehensive official account of the incident.
