The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is expected to unveil its upgraded Ghana cedi banknotes, known as the Heritage Series, on November 12, 2026, as part of efforts to modernise the country's currency and improve its security, durability and accessibility.
The unveiling will introduce redesigned versions of the existing Ghana cedi denominations, featuring enhanced security measures and design elements inspired by Ghana's history, culture and national identity.
The Heritage Series will cover all eight existing denominations: GH¢1, GH¢2, GH¢5, GH¢10, GH¢20, GH¢50, GH¢100 and GH¢200.
Improved Security and Accessibility
The upgraded banknotes are expected to incorporate enhanced security features to make counterfeiting more difficult. They will also be designed with improved durability to withstand prolonged circulation and reduce the frequency of replacing damaged notes.
Dominic Owusu, Director of Currency Management at the Bank of Ghana, reportedly confirmed the November 12 unveiling date during an engagement with disability groups in Accra.
He also highlighted the importance of making the new banknotes accessible to visually impaired people through improved tactile identification features.
The central bank is additionally exploring digital solutions, including a mobile application that could help users identify different denominations by scanning banknotes and announcing their values.
Existing Cedi Notes to Remain Legal Tender
The introduction of the Heritage Series is not expected to invalidate existing Ghana cedi banknotes.
Current notes will remain legal tender and are expected to circulate alongside the upgraded versions after their introduction.
The initiative forms part of the Bank of Ghana's broader efforts to strengthen confidence in the national currency while improving the security and convenience of cash transactions.
The November 12 unveiling is expected to provide further details about the redesigned banknotes, their security features and the arrangements for introducing them into circulation.
