Mourning has gripped the Ghanaian community in New York after the reported death of Joseph Owusu, 24, whose body was found at a dumpsite in the Bronx about two weeks after he went missing.
News of his death emerged on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, and reports say a scrap collector found him among refuse.
Mr Owusu was a member and organist of the Ghana United Methodist Church in the Bronx. Church members remembered him as a dedicated musician whose service and warm personality endeared him to the congregation.
It is not yet clear what led to his disappearance, how his body ended up at the dumpsite, or whether authorities have established the circumstances of his death. Police in New York have not yet said how he died.
Much of the information so far comes from social media posts and Ghanaian news outlets. The news was first shared in a social media post on 3 November. Readers should treat the details as unconfirmed until the New York Police Department releases an official statement.
The news comes just days after the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Ghanaian teenager Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong in the same borough. He was reportedly shot dead on 29 October 2026.
Ghana's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said the government will work with United States authorities to pursue justice for Javits. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa also assured the teenager's family of government support and appropriate consular assistance.
The Ghanaian community in the Bronx is now waiting for answers. Anyone with information about Mr Owusu's disappearance should contact the NYPD. His family, friends and congregation are grieving a young man known for his music and kindness.
Further details will be added as they are confirmed.
